Thematic
Program on The Geometry of String Theory 2004-2005
|
**Note: There will be a shuttle bus going to Perimeter Institute
on Tuesday, May 10, 2005.
The bus will leave Fields at 12:00 p.m., and will leave Perimeter,
to return, at 4:30 p.m.
Send an email to: stringtheory@fields.utoronto.ca
to reserve a seat.
Schedule of Talks:
Monday, May 9, 2005 -- 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
to be held at the Fields Institute
I. Towards String Cosmology
In this pedagogical lecture some basic part of the standard cosmological
model which is most relevant for the fundamental theoretical physics
will be explained. The common features and differences between early
universe inflation and late-time acceleration will be stressed. Some
recent attempts to address the issues of cosmology in string theory
and higher dimensional supergravity with the emphasis on successes and
still unsolved problems will be presented.
Tuesday, May 10, 2005 -- 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
to be held at Perimeter Institute
II. Stabilization of moduli in string theory I
Recent developments in black hole attractors and fixing moduli near
black hole horizon will be discussed. Main attention will be given to
two particular issues.
1) A striking role of stringy corrections converting a classical singularity
into a regular black hole with the singularity covered by the horizon.
2) An emergent relation between black hole attractors and cosmology
with regard to moduli stabilization.
Wednesday, May 11, 2005 -- 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
to be held at the Fields Institute
III. Stabilization of moduli in string theory II
A detailed arguments will be given why stabilization of certain moduli
is a prerequisite for string cosmology. We proceed with recently established
class of string theory vacua forming a large landscape of string theory.
New ideas about stabilization of moduli via instanton corrections to
the superpotential will be presented based on counting of the zero modes
of Dirac operator on M5 brane with background fluxes.
Renata Kallosh
Prof. Kallosh's current research involves theories of fundamental interactions
including gravity, different aspects of supersymmetry, supergravity
and M/string theory. She is also working on quantum theory of black
holes and gravitational waves in supersymmetric theories. Most recently
Prof. Kallosh was involved into studies of cosmology of the early universe
and properties of dark energy in the framework of M/string theory.

The Fields Institute Coxeter Lecture Series (CLS) brings a leading mathematician to the Institute to give a series of three lectures in the field of the current thematic program. The first talk is an overview for a general mathematical audience, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students. The other two talks are chosen, in collaboration with the organizers of the thematic program, to target specialists in the field.
