Thematic Program on the Geometry of String Theory
A joint program of the Fields Institute, Toronto & Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, Waterloo

Workshop on String Phenomenology
March 28-April 1, 2005
to be held at the Perimeter Institute

Workshop Organizers:
Jan Louis, Robert Myers, Gary Shiu

National Science Foundation

Workshop photos can be viewed here.

LHC Stretching Exercise
The "data" will be presented on Monday morning at Gordy Kane's talk. Everyone is encouraged to figure out the underlying theory just as they will for the LHC. There will be an extended session on Wednesday afternoon devoted to discussing the implications of collider data to stringy physics. The answer will be revealed on Friday before the conference concludes.

Bus Service
Please note, for participants attending the String Phenomenology Workshop (March 28 - April 1, 2005) immediately following the N=1 Workshop, at Perimeter Institute, there will be buses leaving the Fields Institute on Sunday, March 27, 2005 at 1:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. travelling to the Four Points Sheraton in Kitchener/Waterloo. There will be sign-up sheets available to reserve a seat.

Accommodation/Travel:
String Phenomenology workshop participants will be staying at the Four Points Sheraton in Kitchener and a shuttle will run between the hotel and PI daily.
Although non-invited participants are responsible for covering their own accommodation costs, you can take advantage of the corporate rate at the Four Points Sheraton at $105/night. To make a reservation, please call them at (519)744-4141 and tell them you are with the "Perimeter Institute reservation".
The Four Points Sheraton is located in downtown Kitchener, at 105 King Street East.

Overview:
String phenomenology is an emerging research area in the rich interdisciplinary boundaries of string theory, particle physics, and cosmology. Although research in string phenomenology is motivated by physical questions, progress often comes from connections to more formal and mathematical aspects of string theory. These connections include:

  • How does the Standard Model of particle physics arise from string theory?: Calabi–Yau manifolds, G2 manifolds, brane worlds, orientfolds, intersecting D–branes, warped compactifications, flux compactifications

  • Can string theory provide a realistic cosmology?: brane cosmology, tachyon condensation, string field theory, decay of unstable branes, thermodynamics of strings and branes, Hagedorn temperature, models of inflation, time–dependent backgrounds

  • What are the experimental signatures of string theory?: brane worlds, extra dimensions, signatures of short distance physics from early universe cosmology, cosmic strings

It is truly an exciting time in cosmology where experiments have produced and are continuing to yield an abundance of precision data. Similarly, collider experiments at Fermilab, SLAC and CERN, as well as precision low–energy experiments, have the potential to make remarkable new discoveries in particle physics in the next five years. Hence string phenomenology is both a timely and exciting topic of a workshop in 2005.
