A Lagrangian Approach to Deriving Energy-Preserving Numerical Schemes
for the Euler-Lagrange Partial Differential Equations and Its Applications
We propose a Lagrangian approach to deriving energy-preserving finite
difference schemes for the Euler-Lagrange partial differential equations.
Our approach is based on a combination of the symmetry of time translation
of the discrete Lagrangian and the discrete gradient method.
From practical
point of view, it would be noteworthy that our approach naturally derives
explicit or linearly implicit schemes in most cases, while usual application
of the discrete gradient method to the Hamiltonian equation yields nonlinear
schemes.
We also
discuss some extensions, which include use of other symmetries, triangular
meshes and a discrete analogue of the Legendre transformation.
Terms
of Award
We invite
applicants to submit their papers to be considered for the New Talent
Award. The winner of the best paper will be invited to give a plenary
talk at SciCADE 2011 in Toronto. All local expenses will be covered
for this speaker, and the registration fee will be waived as well.
Who
is eligible to apply:
1. a candidate must be under 35 years old as of 1 January 2011; and
2. a candidate must not have completed their PhD more than 4 years ago
(that is, before 1 January 2007).
Submission guidelines for New Talent Award:
1. Those wishing to be considered for the New Talent Award are invited
to email a electronic manuscript and a note giving their birth-date
and the date when their PhD was completed to the conference organizer,
Bob Russell (rdr<at>cs.sfu.ca).
2. Deadline for New Talent submission was 1 April 2011.
3. A candidate may submit a jointly-authored paper, but the entry must
primarily be the original work of the candidate. In this case, we ask
that the manuscript be sent along with a statement from the co-authors
agreeing to the submission and detailing the candidate's contribution
to the paper.
All entries for the New Talent Award will be considered by the SciCADE
2011 Scientific Program Committee.
