Abstract:
Granular flow problems in bulk material handling have historically been solved using empirical-based calculation methodologies. With Discrete Element Method (DEM) numerical simulation becoming more accessible and computing power evolution, these simulations are being applied to a wide range of bulk material handling flow problems. The talk will highlight, with numerous real project examples, recent industrial project applications of DEM. It will also touch upon the more recent related advances that are relevant to the process and mining industry. Finally, the specific challenges related to the efficient application of DEM, like calibration or computational resources, will be presented.
