Thresholds Abound: How Biomimicry led to an Understanding of Fluids, the PowerCone Technology, and a Better Wind Turbine
Biomimicry is currently thought of as the latest cool trend in technology, a catch-phrase used by marketing agencies to sell their product and make it 'Eco'. However, Deep Biomimicry; understanding the physics behind a biological or natural phenomena, can lead to profound understandings that can go beyond what any marketer could dream up. Understanding for instance, the physical interactions between a structure and a fluid where the fluid remains laminar, can give clues to current areas that remain unknown to science in the world of physics, fluid dynamics and applied mathematics. This talk will focus on the invention of a PowerCone as an enhancement device to large-scale wind turbines, the current research that is on-going, and the moment of creation when biology, fluid-dynamics and mathematics came together in the form of a threshold equation.

Mr. R. A. Church is the Founder and CEO / CTO at BiomeRenewables Inc where they are developing biologically-inspired renewable energy technologies. They are launching with the PowerCone, a wind turbine enhancement technology that enables 9 world-firsts in the wind industry with initial indications suggesting that this technology could break the Betz Limit. The geometry is inspired by an applied mathematical equation that Mr. Church derived that describes turbulence, known as a threshold equation.
Mr. Church completed his MDes in Strategic Foresight and Innovation (SFI) at OCADU as a Dean's Entrance Scholar and Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship (SSHRC) recipient. There, he derived Integrated Cybernetic (IC) theory, a systems view that allows for proportional interactions to be understood within ecology, society and our economy. He has given university lectures and advised governments in both Canada and Europe, being.a thought-leader in the field of biomimicry. Recently, Church was nominated as a Forbes 30 under 30 in Energy.
