We will present an introduction to the constructions of the ambient and Poincare metrics associated to a conformal manifold together with some applications: construction of GJMS operators and Q curvature. We will also describe the appearance of these objects as log term coefficients in expansions of solutions of scattering problems and some related constructions involving the asymptotics of minimal submanifolds of Poincare-Einstein spaces.
