Abstract:
Cosmic strings are objects that occur in theories where the space of vacua is not simply connected. The thickness of these objects is typically tiny compared to their length. Thus one would like to treat these objects as distributions. This sort of treatment is straightforward in weak field (linearized) gravity. However (as this talk will explore) treating cosmic strings as distributions is problematic in general relativity.
