We show that within the moduli space of cubic polynomials, and within the moduli space of quadratic rational maps, for each integer $k\geq 1$, the set of conjugacy classes of maps with a prefixed critical point of preperiod $k$, is an algebraic curve that is irreducible (over ${\mathbb C}$). Our proof is purely arithmetic.
