Abstract:
Serge Lang conjectured in the 80s that a complex projective manifold X should be hyperbolic (that is, there is no nonconstant holomorphic map from the complex plane to X) if and only if any subvariety of X is of general type. The conjecture is still wide open, but I'll discuss a few interesting cases where it has been proved.
