In this talk I show a relation between sphere packings in an n-space that are tangent a given family of spheres and packings of equal spheres on a sphere. This relation gives generalizations of Steiner's porism and Soddy's hexlet to higher dimensions. In dimensions three and four, sphere packings and the corresponding spherical packings of circles will be considered in detail.
