Steven Khan (Brock University)
Steven’s work and research encourages students to think of mathematical education in a wider social and societal context, aiming to promote a deep understanding of the possibilities for multispecies flourishing through mathematics education. He studies the interaction of math and culture, ethnomathematics, and promotes teaching of math in a way that allows for individuals to learn through the lens of their own experiences. He has been heavily involved in the promotion of anti-racist and Indigenous education at the University of Alberta.
Joe Restoule General (Learning Resource Teacher at Jamieson Elementary School)
Over the past two decades, Joe has gained familiarity with the struggles that students, particularly those belonging to First Nation communities, face when learning and engaging with mathematics. He works with students at his school who need a little extra help or a different approach to get to grips with the topics, utilising technology and games with great results.
Phiona Lloyd-Henry (Vice-Principal, Peel District School Board)
Phiona has served as Equity and Inclusive Education coordinator for Peel District School Board in the Greater Toronto area. She has taught English, History, careers, and civics. She coordinated the school board’s We Rise Together action plan, developing the curriculum, developing learning resources and facilitating anti-racism training. Phiona is also the Chair of the Education Committee on the Board of the Jamaican Canadian Association. She is committed to making education more inclusive and equitable. She works to build on students’ lived experiences and existing knowledge to achieve this.
Dr Beyhan Farhadi (Postdoctoral Visitor in the Faculty of Education at York University and secondary teacher at the Toronto District School Board)
Dr Beyhan Farhadi is a strong advocate for a fully funded public education system. She has researched in depth the relationship between educational inequality and e-learning in the Toronto District School Board. Beyhan’s current research is looking into online educational policy during COVID-19 school closures and how it has impacted the ability of teachers to meet the needs of their students.
