SHORT ORALS - BREAKOUT ROOM 2 - Reflections on the First Year of Using Beast Academy Online (BAO) with Pre-service Teacher Candidates
We integrated Beast Academy Online into a Primary-Junior Mathematics Methods course for pre-service teachers, aiming to enhance their mathematical content knowledge and confidence. Grounded in the literature on Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching (MKt/M4T), our approach incorporates deliberate practice, strategic variation, Mastery-based approaches, and Universal Design for Learning principles. We reflect on the challenges and our own biases. Initial findings indicate the platform's potential in developing both mathematical knowledge and effective teaching principles. Despite initial concerns, it surpassed previous tools. Future research will delve deeper, addressing identified friction points and involving candidates' feedback, aiming to improve pre-service teachers' mathematical confidence and capability.
