SHORT ORALS - BREAKOUT ROOM 2 - What does it mean to teach numeracy in technology-rich environments? Reflecting on the experience of New Brunswick
In our work, we promote a definition of numeracy that reflects one’s capacity building in creating, identifying, using, and interpreting quantitative relationships and mathematical concepts in a variety of contexts. Our presentation will reflect on novel forms of numeracy through technology-rich interdisciplinary projects involving robotics, programming (coding), 3D printing, big data / AI / and augmented reality. We also look into the potential of makerspaces, flexible classrooms, and online collaborative platforms to support active, collaborative, constructive, authentic, and goal-directed learning in solving real-life problems. Such learning environments open doors to novel forms of mathematical activities, which are informal, hands-on, and experiential.
