We explore a method initiated almost a hundred years ago by F.P.Ramsey and Th. Skolem in their solution of an instance of the decision problem for a class of first order formulas. We isolate particular kind of decision problems which we call basis problems and show that in many different contexts the expansion method leads us towards their solutions.
