We survey some results concerning unitary groups of C*-algebras, with an interest in when the group, metric, or topological group structure can give K-theoretic or tracial information about the C*-algebra. We then state a result, which uses the state of the art K-theoretic classification of embeddings, that allows one to pass from certain embeddings of unitary groups to embeddings of certain C*-algebras.
