Abstract:
In this lecture, addressed to mathematicians also outside Number Theory, we shall present in elementary terms the concept of (Weil) height of algebraic numbers, and illustrate its analogy with the concept of degree of rational or algebraic functions. We shall briefly mention some evolutions of this concept, its behavior with respect to algebraic transformations, and give Northcott's finiteness theorem and some applications.
