One theme in tropical geometry in recent years has been the development of algebraic foundations, leading to a theory of tropical schemes. A tropical scheme is described (locally) by a tropical ideal, which is an ideal in the semiring of tropical polynomials satisfying extra matroidal structure. I will review this definition, and give an update on recent progress in this area. Work of mine in this talk is joint with Felipe Rincón.
