Workshop on Waves in Neural Media
Description
Waves propagating through neural media are crucial in a number of neural processes. Examples include calcium waves that propagate through astrocytes and cortical spreading depression that dramatically suppresses neuronal electrical activity. The three major stages in neuronal wave propagation are typically instigation, propagation and recovery. Each of these stages presents a number of modelling challenges. In particular, widely different time and length scales are involved, extremely narrow boundary layers arise and complicated nonlinear processes for ionic transport must be considered. All of these factors mean that understanding waves in neural media is an extremely challenging topic. Participants will be invited to present their recent work on related topics and during round table discussions, we will consider various models for wave propagation and how to use mathematical modelling techniques to better understand signal transmission in neural media.
