Abstract:
In the early 1950s, Jean-Pierre Serre re-interpreted the Riemann-Roch theorem on non-singular curves in terms of Euler characteristics in sheaf cohomology, a theory that was extremely new at the time. I want to explore how this reinterpretation affected the theorem's conceptualization, breaking with earlier (and even contemporaneous) developments, e.g., those of Zariski.
